The Story

April 14, 2020

Last week I launched ‘The Story’ a new weekly publication on substack.

Over the coming year I will be exploring the human story via the prism of spirituality, storytelling and the sacred nature of art.

My aim is to offer a space to contemplate the challenges and opportunities of our age.

For £5 a month you will receive a minimum of two letters a month and opportunities to take part in group work. You can take out a year subscription for the reduced cost of £50.

I’m excited to experience this new endeavour with you.

We are human…

January 10, 2020

I want to take a moment, on this the first full moon of the decade to thank you all, I’m blessed to have each of you in my life. I’m blessed to be able to teach meditation and ritual to a vibrant group of beautiful and unique individuals and be of service to my community.

Last year was intense and at times a major struggle. Releasing a feature film independently while shooting and editing another feature and running my classes and workshops was overwhelming. Time is always mygreatest challenge. I have a young family and no family close by to help with childcare.

It’s vital I share truthfully, that I also have challenges as you all do. I don’t want anyone to think I have all of the answers. I might have one or two, but I reject the notion of gurus. We need teachers who are honest about the fact that we each hold part of the puzzle. We are all miracles. No one is perfect or infallible.

This year I’ve challenged myself to be even more accessible. I’ll share weekly videos, recorded before or after my classes. I want to complete work on a book that’s very close to my heart. I’m going to share more thoughts and impressions on the crisis humanity faces. Practically I want to role up my sleeves and be of use for whatever time I have left on planet earth.

We are human. We grow. We learn. We live. We die. We hopefully aspire to leave the world a slightly better place.

The first two Ritual Art Workshops of the new decade take place on the 19th of January in Hitchin and on the 2nd of February in Bristol.

Below are testimonials from participants. They speak eloquently about the work and the results.

I first encountered John Harrigan during an immersive screening of his film Strange Factories. I was transported to another world and the piece blew my mind and opened my heart. I intuitively knew that what I had experienced was more than a viewing of a film and that I had been a part of this and my story had been changed. This Art was theatre of manifestation, it had a strong intention behind it and was thus magic. When I found an opportunity to participate in a ritual art workshop, I immediately felt compelled to participate. I was very ill at the time, had no money and had to travel. I was very anxious and felt like I had no business being there but something other pushed me to attend.

It was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I got to connect with people in ways I never thought were possible. I have seen that I was trapped in a story and found the tools and power to actively change the direction of the story of life. I tapped into something other than me, the numinous, the mystery, the unknown and found that this was the source of my strength. Since that first workshop 7 years ago , my life has changed significantly. It is unrecognisable and have found the power and strength to create the life I desire. I have met challenges with integrity and a resilience I didn’t know was possible. I have been in awe of beauty I didn’t know existed. My heart has been opened.

I have participated in four ritual art workshops since and one of the different aspects of this work to other practices I’ve experienced, is that the workshop takes root. I leave changed and because of the authenticity of the work, it takes a life of its own.

I would recommend this work to anyone who wants to recreate their life and the story they have about themselves. I have a depth of gratitude to John Harrigan and FoolishPeople, that the only way I know how to repay, is to pass it on.

Damien Moran

It has taken almost 2 weeks to fully process the incredible experience of taking part in the Ritual Art Workshop, and it is something that I will remember for the rest of my days. I’ve been lucky enough to have some truly memorable moments through shamanism and other spiritual practices, but nothing on this scale. John is one of the most engaging, passionate and humble people I have ever met and it felt at times like our group coming together was something beyond the synchronistic.

We deconstructed ourselves, releasing all of the pretence and mirage that sometimes makes life feel like a badly written soap opera. And then we healed, allowing our true selves to finally find a voice. Mine has been stifled for way too long and I’d almost forgotten what it sounded like. A big thank you to John and everyone that took part in our journey that day. If you’re reading this, and you can make it to the next one, keep listening to that part of you that craves the unconventional”

Richard White

I went to John Harrigan’s ritual art workshop with no expectations. I met the most amazing individuals…my voice finally came alive through a song, ‘You are my sunshine’. This song summed up how I felt about my daughter, my mother and being an artist. After the outburst I cried even more because for the first time in my life I felt ‘LIGHT and FREE. I never in a million years thought I would be brave enough to be completely free, but I did that in front of complete strangers. Sunday was by far the best day of my life apart from the birth of my daughter. I now feel anything is possible and I’m ready to begin my new journey. I can’t thank everyone enough for such a life changing experience. You have all changed my life to the better.

Kerry-Ann Waison

I had lost my way, been damaging myself in ways I had yet to recognise and really didn’t know how to get my life back in balance. I felt totally broken. I saw that John offered one-to-one tuition, which is tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. Believing in divine providence, I knew intuitively that I needed this man’s help and thus signed up for the service. It has proved to be a most wise decision.

John is passionate about people, their story and their own place in this world. John is an inspirational presence; he has great instincts and allows you space to trust your own intuition, to have faith in yourself and grow. I personally cannot thank John enough for his work with me and for his patience and attentiveness in answering any concerns or queries, without judgement or criticism. If you need to climb back out of the ditch and back on your true path then I suggest John is the man to help you.

Linda Pottinger

I feel like I have been through several life times since this journey began. I have only today realised the releasing, healing, and power of this process. Only today am I on the other side understanding what I have cleared and what amazing new creativity has been unleashed. Only today am I lifted from the fog of a dream that felt so real. Today I am saying goodbye to the knot in my stomach that has been tied so tightly since the age of 5. Today I say goodbye to these old emotions that no longer serve me. Today I step back into my power and live the life of my design and not the life that I thought was mine.

John words cannot express how much this journey has changed my life, so subtly yet so forcefully. Today I am brave, courageous and on the other side of this particular hero journey. Thank you

Kama J Frankling

I was invited to The Ritual Art Workshop by a friend who thought it would be beneficial, but had told me very little about what I was about to experience. My decision to go along and fully immerse myself was one of the best I have made. It was a challenging day emotionally, but the space that John (and the other participants) created made me want to open both heart and mind. I felt changes in myself immediately, and this has continued, sometimes in small and subtle ways, at other times raw and powerful. I feel for the first time in years I have a real connection with me and my story and I am excited for what this brings for the future.

Sarah Lindsey

Those of you who know me well will already be aware of the changes in me since I took part in the first Ritual Art Workshop in June and a subsequent one in July of this year, but I think the difference must be apparent to even those of you who don’t know all of the details.

John Harrigan gave me the tools to free myself when I didn’t even know I was imprisoned, and in doing so has helped me find my way to where I should have been all along. I have so much love for this man and his work.

The May full moon meditation was a wondrous evening, the best part of my work is the participants, and we had lots of new faces. Both the April and May Full Moon Meditation workshops sold out.

We still have places left for the June Full Moon Meditation workshop at Hitchin Lavender.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Hitchin Lavender.

“Personally, I think the most important benefit of meditation is that it helps participants to find their own truth and direction in life.”

Autumn

September 20, 2018

Autumn begins on Sunday, it feels like it has already arrived.

The Harvest Moon is on Monday. Our full moon this month feels auspicious, we’ve made our way through the majority of 2018. What a strange and complicated year it has been.

Earlier this week I was blessed with feedback in the form of a review from Linda Pottinger, who began attending my Full Moon Meditation workshops earlier this year.

“I first met John Harrigan when a friend treated me to a Full Moon meditation workshop at Hitchin Lavender in June 2018. I had never meditated before in my life. John’s guidance turned the individuals present into a community to embrace and share in this experience, made all the more pleasurable by the wonderful surrounding landscape of the lavender fields.

I have been to every Full Moon meditation since and find I learn more about myself with each session. Having been under relentless stress for some twelve years, life had become totally disjointed for me.

Having furnished him with some background about me, my life and the troubles I was encountering he set tasks for me. They have been personally very challenging and have required commitment, yet by following his guidance and instruction and with his continued support and encouragement I have reached a place in my life where I know that the opportunities lying ahead for me are limitless. As a writer, John used this avenue as a vehicle for me to work through my specific problems. In doing so I have banished some truly awful ghosts, re-discovered myself and come through this with a self-belief that I have never had before.

John is an inspirational presence; he has great instincts and allows you space to trust your own intuition, to have faith in yourself and grow.
I attended one of John’s creative writing workshops, mainly as a spectator. I could immediately feel how all those in the class were connected and could immediately sense John’s influence at work.

Who would have thought I could possibly stand and read a script of the darkest moment in my life to a room full of strangers at a recent literary event? I most certainly wouldn’t have without John’s persuasion and faith in me.

I personally cannot thank John enough for his work with me and for his patience and attentiveness in answering any concerns or queries, without judgement or criticism.

If you need to climb back out of the ditch and back on your true path then I suggest John is the man to help you. I am attending his Theatre of Manifestations course on 13th/14th October this year and am excited to see how this will challenge me further. From being stuck at the crossroads, clueless as to which way to turn, I now have a world of possibilities – all of them good!”  Linda Pottinger

It’s difficult to quantify how this makes me feel, the main emotion is gratitude that my path has lead me to meet people like Linda and everyone (Both past and present) who has attended my classes and workshops. I’m thankful to each and everyone of you. It has been one of the most profound experiences to share in your journey. The most exciting and empowering aspect of my work is meeting you all.

BOOK NOW.

The demands placed upon us have never been greater. How close are you to mental or physical exhaustion?
It’s a common question that we tackle over and over, throughout the course of our lives. Providing the correct level of self care is perhaps the most important task we ever face, yet we often don’t look after ourselves adequately and we’re made to feel guilty if we attempt to claim time for ourselves.

It can feel almost impossible. We don’t have the time. We don’t have the support. We don’t like ourselves and believe we’re not worthy of kindness, even from our own hands.

It’s not true.

Self care is a basic human right.

Often it’s when we’re in crisis or survival mode that we’re forced to confront the true cost of ignoring our most basic mental and physical needs.

Self care is the essence of being in survival mode. Often the body or mind takes over and shuts down, forcing us to rest, because we can’t do anything else but experience the true state of our health.

We owe it to ourselves and our loved ones, we must engage in an ongoing assessment of how we’re managing our health.

This can be done in all kinds of ways, but the most simple and effective manner is through a daily meditation practice. Meditation offers clarity and healing, aiding us to ease mental stress and clear anxieties, so we can clearly acknowledge how our actions are impacting our physical and mental health.

Over time, meditation helps us to release pain and suffering. This leads to a decrease in behaviours that impact us negatively and stop us from seeing the true picture.

It’s common for people who meditate to report that addictive behaviours diminish, as the quick fix coping strategies we once used when stressed or feeling anxious (such as eating or drinking too much) are no longer required. They’re replaced by the equilibrium that meditation offers.

Meditation offers us the space to cultivate vitality and strength. So we can fully appreciate the journey we’re on.

My next Salt Cave Meditation Workshops take place on the 3rd and 31st of August.
The restorative power of meditation combined with the healing effects of halo therapy heals body and mind. Salt Therapy aka Halotherapy, is a powerful and natural treatment of respiratory and skin conditions.

Location and setting is an important part of each Moon Meditation session, we will explore the history of salt as a purifying and healing mineral. This hour long class teaches you how to meditate, embrace positivity and reduce stress using various visualisations, exercises and meditations. The session will aid you to refocus for the month ahead and is suitable for all levels of experience.

John

We’ve arrived at the end of the first third of the year. If you’ve had anything like the journey I’ve had, it’s been quite the ride. Rewarding, intense and often challenging.

The task of maintaining focus on what you hope to achieve across the whole of a year is difficult. Time moves at an ever increasing rate, further demands are placed on our lives and relationships.

We lose the thread, the map becomes torn, the way is shrouded in fog.

Patience is a virtue when we can find ourselves lost. Self care, kindness and a refocus on our own needs is vital. Respect for our own existence is a skill that needs to be maintained and practiced in a culture that only focuses on the surface layers of experience.

Meditation and creativity enable us to refocus on what exists within our subconscious. They offer tools to release the trauma and pain we have experienced on our life journey, aiding us to slowly and calmly find our way once again.

This is traditionally a time when we plant seeds, a period where we cultivate and nurture, so we might reap and harvest later in the year. Now is the moment to contemplate how we wish to proceed into the next stage of 2018.

Over the coming weekend, I have three workshops that each offer a different space and perspective for reflection.

On Friday I’m teaching the Salt Cave Meditation Workshop at Twinwoods in Bedford. This workshop combines the healing and restorative power of Meditation with Salt Therapy aka Halotherapy a powerful, natural treatment of respiratory and skin conditions. This workshop focuses on body and mind.

On Saturday I return to Hitchin Lavender for my weekly 9am morning meditation class. The landscape at Hitchin Lavender Farm is changing as spring takes hold. New life is everywhere. After a busy week, this group meditation class is a way for you to begin the weekend with positivity, peace and tranquility.

The end of the first third of 2018 is marked by a Full Moon. This Sunday 29th April at 7pm I will be facilitating the Full Moon Meditation Workshop at Hitchin Lavender. This meditation workshop utilises the light of the full Moon to illuminate the next stage of 2018. We’re almost fully booked, six places are left.

Chapter One

On the 7th May my Chapter One creative writing workshop takes place at Hitchin Lavender.

The Chapter One monthly creative writing workshop launched last year at David’s Bookshop to great success. This year, the Chapter One creative writing workshops return at our new home Hitchin Lavender Farm. Writers thrive when they have the opportunity to share their experiences, have exposure to different styles and genres and gain access to support from peers and professional writers who offer quality constructive and non judgemental feedback.

This aim of this workshop is to empower, motivate and teach you new skills and tools that you can use in your writing to attain a greater sense of achievement and wellbeing in your creative practice.

Theatre of Manifestation

On the 8th of May I begin teaching the ‘Theatre of Manifestation’ course at the Clophill Centre. This series of workshops teaches the foundations of Theatre of Manifestation. A working practice of ritual art developed over the last twenty eight years with my work as a founder at FoolishPeople.org. Theatre of Manifestation has its roots in shamanism, storytelling and ritual art and enables you to gain control over all aspects of your life story.

Over four weeks, you will be taught techniques that will enable you to overcome fear, address emotional blocks and effectively control stress so you are ultimately free to explore your own path and journey in life.

This aim of this month long course is to initiate and unlock the truth of your own path in life, via a powerful four week ritual, that will empower, teach you new skills and tools that you can use in everyday life to attain a greater sense of wellbeing, happiness and peace.

You can find my timetable of classes and workshops and booking details at JohnHarrigan.net

If you’re a previous participant of my classes/workshops and would like further guidance or support, please drop me a line.

Take care of yourself.

Happy Spring Equinox

March 20, 2018

This is the day of year when darkness recedes and gives way to light. Spring has returned.

I’m very pleased to share the news that I will be returning to Hitchin Lavender for my Saturday Morning Meditation classes each week, commencing on the 14th of April from 9am – 10am. The response to the return of this class has been overwhelming, the first week has almost sold out.

In March and April I’m at the Salt Cave in Bedford, every second Friday from 7pm – 8pm for my very popular Salt Cave Meditation Workshop.

On the 31st of March on the Sap/Blue Moon, we have our first spring full moon meditation workshop at Hitchin Lavender. Last month was very cold, but as many of you know, a large part of our work is connecting to the healing nature of the landscape at Hitchin Lavender and it felt right to be there during the snow. It was breathtaking.

On April the 9th at 7pm ‘Chapter One’ a six month creative writing course, begins for the 2018 season. Chapter One launched last year to great success at David’s Bookshop and this year we will be at Hitchin Lavender. What’s even more exciting is that Chapter One is part of a series of literary events that I will be co-hosting over the summer in 2018 with Hitchin Lavender. If you’ve ever wanted to write creatively or would like to take your work further, please do join us in April.

In May I will be facilitating a ‘Theatre of Manifestation’ course over four weeks at the wonderful Clophill Centre.

I’m very excited about this course and if any of you have the desire to explore shamanism and connect with the power of ritual and nature, then this is the course for you. This workshop will aid you to find the truth of your story in a safe, supportive and creative space. You can book a place by contacting the Clophil Centre on 01525 862278 or by contacting me.

I have a number of private clients who prefer to meet me for one to one meditation classes and guidance. Each session is based on the specific needs of the client, and each year I only take on a maximum of five clients. I have just had an opening, so if you’re interested in booking a one to one class, please do drop me a line.

Thank you to those of you who have already booked places on my workshops and classes this year. I’m looking forward to seeing you soon and continuing our journey together.

John Harrigan
20th March 2018

How are you?

Did you have a good holiday period?

One of the most interesting aspects of each New Year, is the manner in which we’re offered the opportunity to refocus and begin again. We can often feel overwhelmed after the holiday season, I know I did.

January is a new start. There are many positives, but it can (sometimes) feel like there are negatives too.

Many demands are placed upon us and our time in January. We’re pressured to become fit and super healthy within the first few weeks of the year. Quick fixes are everywhere, new mindfulness apps or the latest in diet or exercise regimes.  It’s no wonder we expect miracles to occur.

Real and authentic change takes time and steadfast commitment, not just to yourself, but the world and story you exist within. We begin by learning to be kind to ourselves. A foundation must exist if we are to find peace, tranquility and the power of lasting transformation.

If you’ve attended my classes or workshops, you know how important it is for me to assist others to make this transformation. We find happiness and peace when we have the bravery to manifest our truth. Witnessing this happen is an incredible experience to behold.

Weekly Moon Meditation classes at Hitchin Town Hall continue every Thursday in January at the earlier time of 7pm. The aim of each class is to use group meditation to increase peace and reduce anxiety and stress, helping participants to foster a deeper connection with their intuition.

I’m also facilitating classes every two weeks at the Salt Cave in Bedford on Friday evenings and Saturday Mornings. This is a powerful space and Halotherapy offers many benefits to your health. It’s especially useful to meditate in the Salt Cave at this time of year, when so many people are suffering from colds and viruses. They’re on different dates each month, so make sure you check the timetable and book your space in advance.

On the 31st of January there is an auspicious Royal Blue Blood Supermoon. I will be facilitating a very special Full Moon Meditation workshop to mark this rare occasion, at Hitchin Lavender, where we will work with ritual to engage the revitalising and focusing power of this powerful Super Moon.

I hope to see you before the end of January. Please feel free to email or call if you have any questions about Moon Meditation and your daily meditation practice.
